  10.     David D. Evans has been appointed as Mars Observer
  11. project manager at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, announced
  12. Walker E. Giberson, assistant laboratory director for flight
  13. projects.
  14.     Evans succeeds William I. Purdy Jr., who left JPL
  15. to accept a position in industry. Purdy had been manager of
  16. the Mars Observer project since it was established in 1984.
  17.     Mars Observer is a mission to study the surface,
  18. atmosphere and climate of Mars. It is scheduled for launch
  19. in August 1992.
  20.     Evans, who most recently was manager of JPL's
  21. Defense Program, joined JPL in 1958 as a research engineer
  22. and has held many key management positions at the Laboratory.
  23.     Evans served as deputy manager and manager of the
  24. Liquid Propulsion Section. He was also deputy manager of the
  25. Control and Energy Conversion Division, manager of the
  26. Autonomous Spacecraft Project, deputy manager of the Defense
  27. Space Program and manager of the Pathfinder/Space Relay
  28. Experiment Projects.
  29.     A native of New Mexico, he was graduated from the
  30. University of New Mexico with a bachelor's degree in
  31. chemistry and received a second bachelor's degree in
  32. aeronautical engineering from the University of Colorado.

  34.     Evans and his wife, Nancy, are the parents of three
  35. children and reside in La Canada Flintridge, California.
